Jason Kenney is a liar, and gay equality rights are never safe while Cons are in power

The Cons who are currently hijacking Canada’s government for their own purposes have been pretty quiet in the last two or three years, saying piously that parliament has spoken, when it comes to gay rights and equal marriage, and that they’re not going to revisit the issue.

They are, of course, lying through their teeth, trying to appear moderate just long enough to get a majority government. At which time, believe you me, the nice-nice “we love immigrants, we won’t make abortion illegal again, we won’t revisit gay rights” gloves would be ripped off so fast they’d be in shreds.

As evidence, view this article in the Globe and Mail: Immigration Minister pulled gay rights from citizenship guide, documents show. This is neo-Con Jason Kenney trying to keep from mentioning that in Canada, equal citizenship rights apply to all citizens, including gays and lesbians.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney blocked any reference to gay rights in a new study guide for immigrants applying for Canadian citizenship, The Canadian Press has learned.

Internal documents show an early draft of the guide contained sections noting that homosexuality was decriminalized in 1969; that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms forbids discrimination based on sexual orientation; and that same-sex marriage was legalized nationally in 2005.

But Mr. Kenney, who fought same-sex marriage when it was debated in Parliament, ordered those key sections removed when his office sent its comments to the department last June.

Did you take note? Jason Kenney explicitly ordered the removal of the references to equality rights for gays and lesbians.

This is, of course, proof that Kenney explicitly lied to the gay & lesbian rights group, Egale, when he told them that gay & lesbian rights had been “overlooked” when the guide was being redone. (See Antonia Zerbisias’s blog at the Toronto Star for that info.)

I know, having been one of them for a couple of decades, that the neo-Cons will never stop plotting how to deny and remove equal citizenship rights from all the people they hate. They will make nice till the cows come home, just long enough to get enough power so they can stomp people without anyone being able to stop them.

The equality rights of women, gays and lesbians, and immigrants will never be safe while there is a single neo-Con in this country, plotting.

Sarah Palin is fucking crazy. That is all.

It’s instructive to me that nobody among the Republicans is telling Palin to shut the hell up and talk like a decent, rational, civilized person instead of a crazed Nazi propaganda minister.

Palin doubles down on ‘death panels’

This is what right-wingnuttery has brought society to. And people wonder how the Germans could have accepted the idea that they were a Master Race and the death camps were perfectly acceptable ways to deal with people they didn’t like, and Jews and gays and lesbians and gypsies and all sorts of others were not just expendable, but ought to be killed.

The Monster is always there, just under the surface. And if there’s anything a fundamentalist is good at — whether it’s a Christian fundamentalist, Muslim fundamentalist, Sikh fundamentalist, or Judaistic fundamentalist — it’s awakening the monster in their sheep-like followers, and teaching them to think with extreme emotions and NOT WITH THEIR BRAINS.

Could people have spoken like this – said the horrible things Sarah Palin, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter and their ilk now say with blithe unconcern – thirty years ago, without getting shouted down or shunned in horror for being so rabid? NO. But three decades of whittling away at rationality, justice, and civil behaviour have now made this rabidity commonplace, and acceptable to unthinking right-wingnuts.

Thank you for illustrating that horrifyingly wicked tactic so clearly, Sarah Palin.

And John McCain…? There’s a special place in hell reserved for you, for setting this particular Monster loose in the world.

Right now I hate Alberta

Evolution classes optional under proposed Alberta law:

A controversial Alberta bill will enshrine into law the rights of parents to pull their children out of classes discussing the topics of evolution and homosexuality.

The new rules, which would require schools to notify parents in advance of “subject-matter that deals explicitly with religion, sexuality or sexual orientation,” is buried in a bill that extends human rights to homosexuals. Parents can ask for their child to be excluded from the discussion.

“This government supports a very, very fundamental right and that is parental rights with respect to education,” said Premier Ed Stelmach.

The public secular school system allowing religious people to pick and choose which parts of human rights and rational thought are going to be exercised in the public square??

They don’t like scientific facts, and they hate homosexuals, so instead of having to notice any of them, they can just walk around with their hands over their ears going “Lalalalala, I can’t hear or see you!”

Christian Shari’a law! Enshrined right into a secular state!

I am beyond disgusted. Today I hate my home province more than I can possibly express.

I wish all those bigoted, anti-democratic, narrow-minded wingnut Christian Taliban neo-Cons would move to Iran where they belong and where they can impose all their anti-human beliefs on each other to their hearts’ content.

Rick Warren is a Christian liar

Good little Christian pastor Rick Warren was on Larry King on CNN, on April 6. Here’s a transcript. Please note his remarks a little over halfway down in the transcript:

I am not an anti-gay or anti-gay marriage activist. I never have been, never will be.

During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never — never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop 8 was going.

Then go watch this YouTube video of Rick Warren endorsing and supporting Prop Hate, and encouraging people to do the same:

A big thank you to Tonya J for the heads-up on this.

Bill O’Reilly has blood on his hands

And so do all the other right-wing public hate-talkers. They wanted people to take their hatred to heart, to take action?

Well, they got their wish.

As reported on the Orcinus blog, the man** who shot up a Universalist Unitarian Church in Knoxville, TN last July did it because he was inflamed by a right-wing anti-progressive writer. (**who I refuse to name and give him the publicity; he deserves to have his name utterly forgotten)

The Orcinus blog tells us:

Many of us intuited at the time that [name extracted]’s rampage was exactly the kind of rancid fruit that would inevitably take root in an American countryside thickly composted with two decades of hate radio bullshit, freshly turned and watered with growing middle-class frustration over the failing economy. That suspicion that [sic] was verified in the days that followed, when police searched [name extracted]’s apartment and found it filled with books and newsletters  penned by Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, and other right-wing hate talkers.

And then the man’s “manifesto,” released as he was justly sentenced to life in prison for murder, was released. And we read this:

Know this if nothing else: This was a hate crime. I hate the damn left-wing liberals. There is a vast left-wing conspiracy in this country & these liberals are working together to attack every decent & honorable institution in the nation, trying to turn this country into a communist state. Shame on them…

This was a symbolic killing. Who I wanted to kill was every Democrat in the Senate & House, the 100 people in Bernard Goldberg’s book. I’d like to kill everyone in the mainstream media. But I know those people were inaccessible to me. I couldn’t get to the generals & high ranking officers of the Marxist movement so I went after the foot soldiers, the chickenshit liberals that vote in these traitorous people. Someone had to get the ball rolling. I volunteered. I hope others do the same. It’s the only way we can rid America of this cancerous pestilence.

I thought I’d do something good for this Country Kill [sic] Democrats til the cops kill me…Liberals are a pest like termites. Millions of them Each [sic] little bite contributes to the downfall of this great nation. The only way we can rid ourselves of this evil is to kill them on the streets. Kill them where they gather. I’d like to encourage other like minded people to do what I’ve done. If life aint worth living anymore don’t just kill yourself. do [sic] something for your Country before you go. Go Kill Liberals.

God damn you, Bill O’Reilly. God damn you, Rush Limbaugh. God damn you, Sean Hannity. God damn you, Bernard Goldberg. God damn you for creating the first of what could be many mass murderers.

And God especially damn you, Ann Coulter, you who proclaimed loudly to your stupid, gullible, hate-filled sheeplike followers, that all progressive liberals should be regarded as traitors, rounded up, and executed.

No European fascist could have done better.

Behold the fruit of your labours, you evil vultures with slavering, cannibalistic jaws and blood dripping from your hands.

So what colour star will they have to wear, d’you suppose?

The new extreme right-wing rising star of Israeli politics, Avigdor Lieberman, has some interesting proposals for Israeli citizens.

Check out this article in the Guardian:

He would insist that every Israeli swear an oath of loyalty to Israel as a Jewish state: anyone who loses will lose his citizenship.

Israel Beytenu denies this is racist, insisting that every Israeli will have to swear the oath, Jewish or Arab. It is true that plenty of ultra-orthodox Jews who don’t accept the authority of a godless secular state may also refuse. But the target is clearly Israel’s 1.45 million Arabs. If they will not swear their allegiance, explains Lieberman deputy Uzi Landau, “They will have residency rights but no right to vote or be in the Knesset.”

It is a truly shocking idea. I asked several Israel Beytenu luminaries if they could name a single democracy anywhere that had removed citizenship from those who already had it. I asked what they would make of demanding that, say, British Jews, swear an oath of loyalty to Britain as a Christian country on pain of losing their right to vote. I got no good answers.***[Emphasis mine]

So now I’m wondering. Since even people who were born and raised in Israel and were born citizens can have their citizenship stripped from them if, like the ultra-orthodox, they are not allowed to swear allegience to an earthly power or if — like any balanced, rational, democratic individual on the planet, they believe that this is an atrocity and refuse to swear — what happens then?

Will they have to wear a yellow star, to show everyone they’re suddenly non-citizens? Or will Lieberman let them pick the colour?

(*** Perhaps there was no answer because these people were following the American Republican line: it’s horrible when it’s done TO US. But jolly fine when we do it to EVERYONE ELSE. ‘Cause we’re, you know, the good guys and stuff. Just ask us. To hell with human rights and equality.)

In the “Can’t Stand the Heat, Get out of the Kitchen” department…

Sarah Palin continues her non-stop whine that she gets the exact same media scrutiny as every other well-known public figure on the planet:

Sarah Palin fired a new salvo in her war on the media, unloading in a new interview on her home state paper and “bored, anonymous, pathetic bloggers who lie.”

Which followed her whining about the interviews she chose to do with with Katie Kouric, and her choice to participate in Tina Fey’s doing a sendup of her (the way, you know, satirists do sendups of every political figure in the public eye):

She gave Ms. Couric the back of her hand. “Katie,” she said, “you’re not the center of everybody’s universe.” … Ms. Palin was similarly peevish about Tina Fey’s impersonations of her on “Saturday Night Live.” There was “some, perhaps, exploiting, that was done via me, my family, my administration,” she said. Yet she was more than happy to have done some, perhaps, exploiting of her own. She did, after all, do a star turn on what she referred to familiarly as “S.N.L.”

Ms. Palin, it’s called “going through the same public scrutiny, praise, and criticism that every public figure on the planet goes through.” Grow up and live with it, or step out of the public eye.

Of course, I’d have a lot more sympathy if I could recall hearing Ms. Palin yelling at the media for putting the Clintons through this identical thing for, oh, the last sixteen years or so. Did I miss that bit, Sarah?

Didn’t think so. So grow up and live with it. Or, you know, just go away and shut up.

Fucker can’t keep his head out of other people’s pants

Ken Starr is Coming After Your Marriage

The Yes on 8 campaign wants to invalidate 18,000 same sex marriages – they’ve filed a brief with the California Supreme Court to that effect today.

With Ken Starr – yes, that Ken Starr – as their lead counsel

What an obsession that man has with the genitals of strangers!

Don’t you wish the right-wingnuts would get counselling for this constant, never-ending, all-encompassing, completely and utterly preoccupying, enthralling, frantic, fervent obsession with everybody else’s genitals??

A Big Nasty gets to meet his Maker

One of the instigators of the most evil, fascist political movements we’ve seen in North America in decades (and of which we’re now seeing the devastating economic results, worldwide) has died.

Conservative activist Paul Weyrich dies

Weyrich was one of three founders of the Moral Majority and later had a hand in creating the Christian Coalition.

Nuff said. If Weyrich was right about the existence of an afterlife, I suspect he is now in the middle of a Very Big Surprise.

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” (Matthew 25:41-46)

Or this:

Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ (Matthew 7:22,23)

RIH, Paul Weyrich.
